5 Ottawa Summer Activities You Haven’t Tried Yet
When I first moved to Ottawa, I used to hop on public transit just to see where it would take me. It was my way of getting to know my new home; one unexpected adventure at a time (thank goodness for 90 minute transfers). All of those spontaneous bus rides have turned into a mental map of hidden gems and underrated experiences that I now keep tucked in my back pocket.
I get a ton of joy from surprising my out-of-town guests with plans that skip the usual tourist checklist. Sure, Parliament is impressive and we’ve got museums galore. But if you really want to experience Ottawa in the warmer months, I know of some great activities you won’t find in every travel guide!
Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or just looking to break out of your own routine, here are a few fun and unexpected ways to experience summer in the capital!
If floating down a river with a cold drink and zero responsibilities sounds like your kind of daytrip (it’s definitely mine), this lazy river rafting tour is a must!
Aventure Outaouais handles everything; transport, gear, even lunch! All you have to do is kick back, soak up the sun, and let the current do the work.
It’s no secret that Ottawa is a cyclists dream. We have tons of great bike paths and scenic routes to explore! But if you’re just visiting for a weekend or want to avoid fussing with a GPS, Escape Bicycle Tours is the perfect solution.
Their guided rides take you through must-see spots like Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal, or some lesser-known but must-see neighbourhoods that show off the capital’s charm.
Fly Ottawa to Gatineau in a Zip
Traveling between provinces usually means baggage, security lines, and way too much waiting. If you’d prefer the express option (with double the adrenaline), Interzip has you covered!
This is the world’s only interprovincial zipline, letting you soar across the Ottawa River into Quebec in just 30 seconds!
Ottawa has lots of great daytime sights, but why not check out the city’s best views after dark? The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) Star Parties let you and your special someone enjoy the night sky without having to Google constellations later.
No telescope? No problem! Just bring your curiosity and a cozy blanket to share.
Take on a pedal-powered pub crawl
Ottawa is well-known for its bike culture, but the Thursty Pedaler takes it to a whole new level!
This 15-person, pedal-powered party bike will roll you through the Glebe or Hintonburg neighborhoods, stopping at three local pubs or coffee shops along the way. With a curated playlist, a designated Party Pilot, and a built-in dance floor, let’s just say the Vengabus certainly has some stiff competition.
