After the success of Glossier, the cosmetics industry simply became over-saturated. I personally struggled to feel excitement about new product launches because it felt like everything had already been done (or someone else was bound to do it better). Finding a Glossier dupe isn’t nearly as difficult as it once was. They reformulated their best-selling product to meet ‘clean beauty’ standards. This push for brands to be green and clean is nothing more than a greenwashing marketing ploy to gain shelf-space at retailers like Sephora. Unfortunately for brands like Bite Beauty (RIP), a change in ingredients leads to a sudden decline in product quality and consumer trust. It’s a detriment to the brand’s reputation and pushes long-time fans into the arms of another makeup company. The brand was deemed to be a toxic employer. There are several accounts of employee mistreatment, from layoffs during the height of the pandemic, to an entire Instagram page showcasing the racism experienced at by BIPOC staff. It’s disappointing and disheartening to hear what went on behind the millennial pink curtain, but unfortunately unsurprising to hear that a mega-successful brand has little respect for those they employ. For me, I tried to remember things I did in my spare time before baby arrived. For example, things like writing, playing around with makeup, thrift shopping, reading, or taking a long, hot bath. These are all things that I enjoyed and made me feel good. Indulging in things I found pleasurable served as dedicated time and space to reconnect to myself. But don't get this confused with self-care; though that can be pleasurable as well, I personally see self-care rituals as necessary more so than indulgent. A big, frothy bubble bath is great and can be therapeutic for some, but it isn't usually my go-to when I'm coming down from an anxiety attack. These pleasure-seeking moments provided me with a sense of self again, and ultimately made me feel more human (and less like a walking milk machine). It reminded me that I'm permitted to have hobbies and interests still, and I've accepted that I will have to make sacrifices still. I just kick back and relax for 10 minutes while I get my glow on! It's a great way to just unplug and unwind. I may also be guilty of blasting Daft Punk while wearing it - it really adds to the whole experience. I was a little concerned about how bright this was, given that my eyes tend to be very light-sensitive. The built in glasses that help keep this on actually are amber-tinted, so they'll keep your peepers protected! I do notice that after the treatment ends and I take the mask off, I see things with a green-ish hue. I was slightly alarmed the first time, but it goes away after about 30 seconds and my normal vision returns. While the charge holds 30 uses, I've used 10 so far and already see some changes! It's essentially a silicone doe foot applicator, but flat on both sides. It has a little flexibility, but otherwise very stiff and not very comfortable on the lips. The sides of the wand are especially painful, as I noticed it has a seam that wrapped around (likely from the mold it was made in). However, it is easy to wipe off after application, so as to not taint the colour of your future applications. The formula looks milky, and is slightly runny. It was hard to get a totally precise application (You'll see what I mean in a moment). I use baby shampoo to clean my brushes, nothing too fancy. It's gentle enough and it's cheap! I only needed a pea-sized amount for each brush. I wet the brush under the tap, and swirled them on the silicone pad. Rinse until water runs clear, and swish across the base where the bumps are less raised and more spread apart. The silicone pads did a really good job of cleaning any small brushes (eyeshadow/liner, concealer, lip, brow).
